oh my god !! I just discovered you tonight and as a geologist (more at heart now that I'm working in archaeology as a geophysicist) you & your work feel like an absolute gift. Thank you for sharing these recommendations - I am just about to order your book <3 women writing about rocks - my favourite things !!!

Ruth, I have just discovered you! Now I must order Weathering (and more), in fact the only book on this list I have read is Nan Shepherd’s, which I adore. I took it with me as a physical copy when we walked the Camino in Spain a few years ago, despite being cognisant of weight in my rucksack. I knew I had to have a physical book that I could read and re-read. Now it seems that I will need to get that super de luxe edition as companion! (I hope it’s not too creepy to add that my own book has Weather in the title… )

Happy book launch day 🥳

I preordered a copy an age ago in support of your writing with no notion of when I would read it ... seeing as my word of the year randomly ended up as rock and the book arrived today on the eve of the first easter bank holiday that I’ve had off in probably well over 10 years, I suspect it will get opened this evening 😊

It has been a joy to follow your journey putting it out into the world and I hope that it isn’t an anti-climax and that you find delight and joy in your accomplishment 🤗

Not overtly about rocks in the sense of your list, but in a totally delightful middle grade vein - have you read Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake?

What a great list of books - like Janey, I have only read The Living Mountain, and don't know of the other authors, although I do know about Alison Hargreaves. Have you read 'The Hidden Fires: A Cairngorms Journey with Nan Shepherd' by Merryn Glover? I very much enjoyed it.

Weathering has landed in my Audible library so it will be coming with me on a walk later 🙂

Thank you for sharing this list of wonderful books! I have just bought Time on Rock after it sat in my wishlist for the longest time, and I read Line Above the Sky when I was pregnant with my son. As a mountain-loving runner, I was desperate to hear that I could still give into my love of wild and rocky places even with a baby (especially while living in London - neither rocky nor mountainous, so I was kind of living vicariously through Helen's words!).

I have shared a few times on Notes that I am waiting for Weathering to be delivered today, so I can read it as part of Luisa Skinner's gentle book club. Needless to say, many of the books in this post (notably Nan Shepherd's, who I can't believe I haven't read yet!) will soon be on my wishlist...!

Wishing you all the best on publication day: I hope you're able to mark it and enjoy it!

Thank you for these recommendations. I was still up at midnight last night, so received my digital copy of Weathering last night! Then it kept me up later as I couldn’t resist starting to read. Am loving it so far, thank you.

Horrified emoji...I got almost to the end of this fascinating list still thinking 'I have never even heard of any of these women or their work!'. And then, with relief, reached Nan Shepherd...

SO challenged by my ignorance ...what if, instead of just walking on , touching , collecting, photographing and giving nicknames to the fab bits of coastline here in the wild west of Wales (think 'denture rocks'), I put my scatty mind to actually learning about them?!

I love this amplification of women’s voices in stone! I read Timefulness earlier this year and took reams of notes. I considered emailing Bjornerud to ask for the syllabus for the university course she teaches on the same topic, but I wasn’t sure about the etiquette of that. I loved the perspective her book granted — I actually find it comforting to be but a blip — there’s so much wonder in the flow of time. I will read more from your list here. But first, Weathering. Hooray! 🩶
